The Bonehead Play: Avoiding Costly Errors
Presented by: Professor Mark Yochum

On September 23, 1908, rookie New York Giants first baseman Fred Merkle made a base-running error that cost his team a chance at the World Series. While just a minor error in judgment, this "bonehead play" had a profound impact on Merkle's career and legacy. Furthermore, it started a cascade of events that tested the honesty, character and professionalism of his teammates and opponents.

In this one-of-a-kind webinar, master storyteller and legal scholar Professor Mark Yochum will use this infamous tale as a backdrop to demonstrate how lawyers can avoid committed their own bonehead plays and how we should conduct ourselves in the event of the inevitable errors made by ourselves, colleagues and opposing parties.

The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But the Truth: The Ethycal Imperative for Honesty in Law Practice
Presented by:

Lawyers must tell the truth to clients, judges, and even opposing counsel and third parties. In this eye-opening webinar, legal humorist Sean Carter will deal frankly with the very human inclination for dishonesty and explain how to avoid the traps from which dishonesty most often springs. In doing so, he will draw upon current and past nominees from his annual Ethy Awards to show the consequences of dishonesty.

The Personal Contact Rule: No Draculas Allowed
Presented by: Professor Mark Yochum

The ethics canon treats the lawyer like Count Dracula. The lawyer must be invited to meet the fresh client on whom he "feeds." He cannot badger the weak and infirm. He must pay not even one pint of his fees to others to recommend him. He only has free license with his families of blood and friends, of others of his profession, and of those previously marked by him as his clients. And while such rules might have made sense in 19th century Transylvania, how do 21st century lawyers abide by them in an increasingly interconnected world of personal networks and social media?

It's been said that nice guys finish last. And while that might be true in the rough and tumble arenas of politics, professional prize fighting and marriage, nothing could be further from the truth in the practice of law. Zealous representation doesn't require us to be zealots. In fact, the most effective representation requires just the opposite. Nice lawyers finish first ... and so do their clients!

These lawyers learned, albeit too late, that if you do even a minor crime, you will do the disciplinary time.
